“The consciousness has in it many parts and many movements and in different conditions and different activities it changes position and arranges its activities in a different way so as to suit what it is doing — but most people are not aware of this because they live only on the surface and do not look into themselves” – Sri Aurobindo
Mindfulness-based meditation has its origins in ancient Indian spiritual wisdom, where it was developed as a means to cultivate a focused & stable mind, develop insight into the impermanent & interconnected nature of existence, & ultimately achieve enlightenment. As these practices spread to the West, medical practitioners started to explore their potential to help those suffering from stress, chronic pain & other ailments.
Research has found that mindfulness-based practices can help:
● reduce stress, anxiety & depression
● improve learning & memory, emotional regulation & perspective taking
● reduce pain, fatigue & stress in people with chronic pain
● manage diabetes distress, weight, glycaemic control & blood pressure
● reduce menopausal symptoms
● to act with greater intentionality & purpose
The practices can also provide an effective foundation for opening to our inner world, observing the different parts of our being, & becoming more conscious of our inner patterns & how these impact our behaviours and our lives.
This workshop will provide an introduction to mindfulness which will explore its origins & the latest research. Participants will then be guided through a range of mindfulness practices.
